How to Sell
Selling at auction is the quickest, easiest and most straightforward way to sell your classic vehicle and will often return you more money than if you attempt to sell privately. It also removes the hassle of waiting for strangers to come to your property and helps your vehicle take advantage of the worldwide marketing The Duchy Auction Company Limited can provide, both via the internet and through the specialist press, which attracts an enormous crowd of buyers.

Valuations & reserves
We will arrange for the vehicle to be inspected by one of our specialists who will advise you on it's probable value and on any steps you might reasonably take to maximise your return at auction. This inspection is free and carries no obligation whatsoever. We will also discuss the reserve with you (the price below which the vehicle will not be sold). Reserves are kept confidential but bear in mind that a realistic reserve leads to a low estimate that attracts more bidders – and usually a higher price. If we think your reserve may prevent your vehicle from selling, we will advise you that it is not worth entering into the sale, saving you time and money.
A completed entry form, together with the entry fee, will be required prior to the auction to ensure inclusion in the catalogue.
Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles:
· Entry Fee - £150 for a single car and £50 for a motorcycle - there is a discount for two or more entries. VAT where applicable is charged on all our fees, at the prevailing rate.
· Sellers Commissions - 5% for cars or 8% for motorcycles, charged on the value of the hammer price. VAT where applicable is charged on all our fees, at the prevailing rate.

Transport of your vehicle to the auction can be arranged at extra cost – we will need your vehicle on site at least four days before the sale.
We pay out 14 days after the sale, all funds being held in a secure client account during the intervening period. See our Terms & Conditions of Sale for full information.
The sooner we know your vehicle will be in the sale the more chance we have to promote it – not only on this website but via our advertising and PR campaigns and through our many contacts in the media and the classic vehicle world.
We close the catalogue about three weeks before the date of the sale. Entries after this date are classed as late entries and will not appear in the printed catalogue but will be listed separately on a loose leaf insert and are also shown on our website. We charge an extra £100+VAT for late entered cars and £30+VAT for late entered motorcycles but this extra amount is refunded to you if the vehicle sells.
How To Buy
All items may be viewed prior to the auction. Our main viewing days are three days prior to the sale as well as on the day of the sale, when our opening time will be advertised on the sale page. All other viewing is by appointment only, which you may arrange by calling us on 01326 218407.
These are available to buy on site during sale week.
The auctioneers will operate a buyers bid number system and therefore prospective buyers must register beforehand and will be allocated a buyers number.
Identification i.e. drivers licence will be required.
Documents and keys
Documents are available to view at the desk in the auction premises. Buyers will need to present their confirmation of purchase to obtain their documents. Keys will be released separately and only if the buyer is taking the vehicle away at the time of asking for the keys.
Absentee & telephone bids
These will be accepted up to close of business on the night before the sale. A deposit will be required in all cases and may be paid by credit card or other negotiable security. The lots will be purchased for the lowest possible price.
The deposit must be lodged with us by close of business on the night before the sale. All deposits (10% of the lower estimate on each lot you wish to bid on) must be lodged in UK Sterling by 5pm on the day before the auction. We will ask you for a deposit in UK Sterling, in order to register to bid online (refundable on the day after the auction if you do not purchase). Please note - foreign exchange purchasers: the amount we receive in sterling is the amount we will refund in sterling. We are not responsible for foreign exchange fluctuations or bank charges, so the amount the amount you have sent in foreign currency to sterling may not be the amount you receive in refund.
The sale will be live approximately 30 minutes before the auction. There will be audio, but we advise you to follow the speed of bids in the bidding box, rather than the auctioneer’s voice. Internet bids are accepted by the auctioneer (not the online bidding clerk), to avoid conflict with room, telephone or absentee bids. If your bid is not accepted and the bidding is still live, bid again. If you win a lot, an online bidding surcharge of 3% plus VAT if applicable will applied to the hammer price. The normal buyer’s premium of 5% plus VAT if applicable will also still be charged to the hammer price.

If your bid is unsuccessful, we will instruct our bank on the Friday morning after the sale day to send your deposit back to you.
For this, we will need your bank account number and sort code (and IBAN or similar details for accounts not held in the UK). Please send this information to us before the auction, along with the reference you are using for your bank transfer deposit.
Please note - foreign exchange purchasers: the amount we receive in sterling is the amount we will refund in sterling. We are not responsible for foreign exchange fluctuations or bank charges, so the amount the amount you have sent in foreign currency to sterling may not be the amount you receive in refund.
This is where the best bid is secured below reserve and sold subject to acceptance of the bid by the vendor. Please would all sellers and buyers go to office in the saleroom as soon as the hammer comes down.
All lots are offered with the seller’s description. Any information you have seen on the web, in the catalogues or on the signs on the lots will be superseded by the auctioneer’s description. All prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves to condition before bidding on any lot. All vehicles are checked on the information registers of Experian for title problems, such as finance, theft or damage related insurance claims. We ask our vendors to check where possible as to whether registration numbers are transferable – we cannot guarantee, however, that the registration number of a lot is transferable, unless the vendor has specified to us that it is, so please listen to the auctioneer’s description. Important – All the vehicles are sold AS SEEN, and entirely without warranty. This means there is no comeback and no rejection possibility whatsoever after purchase. It is your responsibility to ascertain the true condition of any lot before you make your bid. If you are in any doubt as to the condition, authenticity, identity or provenance of any vehicle, do not bid as there is no ‘cooling off’ period and no post-sale negotiations will be entered into.
Buyer’s premium & VAT
A buyer’s premium at the following rates will be added to the hammer price:
· For Vehicles - 5%+VAT (e.g. on a hammer price of £10,000 you pay £500 premium + £100 VAT if applicable to give a total of £10,600, assuming a VAT rate of 20%)
· For Automobilia and all other items 17%+VAT if applicable
*Items in this sale sold subject to VAT in addition to the hammer price are marked with an asterisk.
Methods of payment
Purchases will only be released when full payment (inclusive of all charges) has been made in cleared funds to The Duchy Auction Company Limited. We will accept payment in the following ways:
· Cash to a total of £3,000 in cash or Travellers Cheques.
· Sterling cheque drawn on a UK branch of any bank or building society –unless previously agreed with us all cheques must be cleared before removal of purchased lots.
· Bank Transfer – our bank details are as follows: Barclays Bank plc, Sort Code: 20-87-94; Account Number 33896803. IBAN No.: GB04BARC20879433896803; BIC No.: BARCGB22.
· Debit Cards drawn on a UK bank- no charge, removal of purchased lots immediate.
· Credit Cards drawn on a UK bank subject to a 1.75 % (including VAT) surcharge – please note certain cards may not be acceptable – ask at the office before commencement of sale – lots paid for by credit card may be removed immediately.
Removal of Lots
Failure to remove lots by the close of business on the Monday after the sale day, will result in storage charges as follows:
Vehicles £10 per day
Motorcycles £5 per day
Automobilia £1 per lot per day
All the above charges are subject to VAT where applicable.
Transport and shipping
A representative of The Duchy Auction Company Limited preferred carrier will be available at the sale and can arrange transport and shipping as agent for buyer or seller (as the case may be).
